Description

Leah parks under the house, between its weather-beaten stilts and teepees of salt-rusted fishing rods, gets out, and puts her key into the door that leads up into the kitchen. It's unlocked, and she imagines John half-heartedly yanking it closed as he headed out. She's not surprised--in his philosophy, if a thief really wants to come up from the beach and steal your stuff, he'll find a way in--but she rarely bothers being angry at her husband's haphazardness any more, especially when she's so tired. She finds the last bottle of merlot and stands at the kitchen counter long enough to pour a serious glassful. Then she walks through the house, closing all the other openings John has left--the kitchen cabinet where she stores the coffee grinder, two different closets, and a series of drawers in the laundry room, which are ajar because he is forever pulling out different weights of line for his fishing equipment. She moves through the house tranquilly, like she is performing a walking meditation, like the doors and drawers are thoughts she lets float through her mind and then on beyond her. When she has circled back into the kitchen, she sees that for once John has scrawled a message on the blackboard next to the fridge: out on Rae--J.
